Dear Families,
Up until now your child has been earning a Science grade primarily on what we do in class. Because a large part of Science is experimentation and investigation much of your child’s grade is based on participation. Below is a list of terms your child will need to know.
Magma – hot liquid rock deep inside the Earth (melted rock)
Lava – hot liquid rock at the Earth’s surface, out of the volcano
Sediment – small pieces of rock and sand that form other rocks
Core – the inner layer of the Earth
Crust – the outer layer of the Earth
Geologist – a person who studies Earth materials
Rocks – made up of more than one mineral
Minerals – made up of one ingredient or substance
Scratch test – done to determine the hardness of a mineral
Mock – fake or not real
Soil - is a mixture of tiny rocks, clay, leaves, sticks, and small pebbles
Sandstone – tan rock made up of grains of sand pressed together
Fossil – the remains of a plant and animal that was buried and preserved in the Earth from past ages.
3 Types of Rocks
1. Sedimentary Rocks – formed by layers of rock pieces squeezed together
2. Igneous Rocks – formed from cooled lava
3. Metamorphic Rocks – rocks that have been changed
Heat and pressure deep inside the Earth can cause Igneous and Sedimentary rocks to change.
Millions of years ago, rocks were formed in layers, one on top of the other.
