Measurement Unit Study Guide
Standard – a unit of measurement that is the always the same and is known by a large number of people.
Length – the distance of something from end to end, usually the longest dimension
Width – the distance from side to side, a dimension shorter than the length
Meter (m) – the standard metric unit for measuring length or distance
Centimeter (cm) – 1/100 of a meter; it takes 100 cm to make 1 m
Kilometer (km) – 1,000 meters
Arm span –the distance from fingertip to fingertip when the arms are outstretched
Height – the distance of a person from the top of the head to the bottom of the feet
Estimate – an approximation, an educated guess as close as possible
Mass – a measure of how much stuff is in an object
Fulcrum – the point on a balance scale that the balance beam rests on and pivots
Base – the part of the balance scale that holds up the balance beam
Balance scale – tool used to measure mass
Gram – the standard unit of mass in the metric system
Distance – how far it is between two points
Temperature – how hot or cold something is.
Thermometer – Tool used to measure temperature
Fahrenheit – U.S. Customary unit used to measure temperature
Celsius – Metric System unit used to measure temperature
Your child will have to know how to measure the length of a line. They will measure using cm, mm, and inches to the nearest ¼ .
