Classroom Expectations!

Management System:

Our fourth grade classroom uses a money system in order to assure a safe and comfortable classroom environment. This was used in past years as well, and the students really seem to enjoy it as it makes them feel “grown-up” and part of the real world!  A brief explanation of how it works is this: The students will all receive their payday of $20.00 each Monday morning when they come to school. On Fridays, they will put any money they have left into the bank and will deposit it into their bank statement books.

Gaining, losing, and spending money will occur for various reasons throughout the week. Students will be able to spend their money on random things, such as moving their desks to a different place in the room, extra free time, computer time, random auctions throughout the year, etc. They will need to pay money for such occurrences as not being prepared with the proper materials needed for the day, incomplete assignments, misbehavior, etc.

Positive behaviors will also be recognized, both individually and as a class, as they definitely deserve to be. Individual students may receive bonus money if caught doing something above and beyond what is expected of them. I will also have a Class Bank in which the class can gain and lose money each day as a whole while working towards a goal. When they reach their goal, they will receive an award of some sort, whether it is a classroom party, movie and popcorn day, etc.

Homework Policy:

The students will each receive a Student Assignment Planner in which they are expected to write down the assignments in class everyday. Parents are required to sign Assignment Planners daily.  It is the students responsiblity to make sure their assignment planner gets signed. If a parent is not available to sign the planners, a guardian can sign. Consequences for not having planners signed will result in a $1.00 fine with the money system. I feel this is beneficial, as students need to start being accountable for themselves and take the responsibility to keep track of their assignments. Also, there will never be any confusion as to what is due. All assignments are due the following day, unless specified with a date in your child's assignment planner.  If your children have a problem with their homework assignments at night, they may call me at school or at home. Please have them make the call.

Incomplete Policy:

Assignments that are not handed in when they are due will be considered late and will be given a maximum of 80%.  I still require completion of work so the student doesn’t miss the concept being taught. If an assignment is not completed on time, the following consequences will occur:

1.   The student will be charged "$10.00" with the money system.
2.      Students will need to turn in their late assignment by 8:00 the next morning or they will receive a 0%.
3.      Loss of Friday "Brain Break."
4.      Possible loss of recess or free time on the day of the incomplete in order for the student to work on the assignment.

This policy may seem strict for some of the students at first, but they will quickly learn that it just doesn’t pay to not hand their homework in. Getting things in on time is a valuable lesson they must learn in every area in life, and I want them to learn this right away before they move on to older grades.

Everyone makes mistakes and forgets things from time to time, so each student will receive 1 coupon a trimester to “redeem” in place of a missing assignment.  If the missing assignment is completed and handed in by 8:15 the following morning, with a late coupon stapled to it, the student will receive full credit.
