Students are taught the expectations using Teach-Tos.  Teach-Tos are lesson plans that systematically teach what appropriate behavior looks like, feels like, and sounds like.  Teach-Tos have been developed for common settings and situations in the building.  See the link below for examples of Teach-To lesson plans.

Teach-Tos

Posters are used throughout the building as a visual reminder of the expectation in that area.  These visuals may also be used as a quick teaching tool if students need a reminder while in a specific area.

Additional Methods for Teaching Prosocial Behaviors

SECOND STEP

"The Second Step program for Kindergarten through Grade 5 is a universal, classroom-based program designed to increase students’ school success and decrease problem behaviors by promoting social-emotional competence and self-regulation. It teaches skills that strengthen students’ ability to learn, have empathy, manage emotions, and solve problems. The Second Step program targets key risk and protective factors linked to a range of problem behaviors. Equipping students with Second Step skills helps a school create a safer, more respectful learning environment that promotes school success for all." Taken from: http://www.cfchildren.org/media/kg5/pdfs/ss_full_review_research.pdf

Visuals of problem-solving steps, how to calm down, empathy, skills for learning and fair ways to play are displayed in the classroom.
