Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS), also referred to as Positive Behavior Supports (PBS), began in the Chippewa Falls Area Unified School district in 2008.  Chippewa Falls Middle School started implementation with students beginning the 2010-2011 school year.  For an explanation of PBIS go to:  http://pbis.org/school/what_is_swpbs.aspx

In Chippewa Falls Middle School we look at the systems and practices we have in place and use data to evaluate our outcomes.  A universal team of building staff meets regularly to develop, analyze, and train staff and students to improve our student outcomes.  Below are examples of what we have developed and implemented.

Our four school-wide behavior expectations were created first.  They are:

Be Safe, Be Respectful,

Be Responsible, and Be Productive

After these were created we developed our School-Wide Behavior Matrix using these four expectations.  We use the behavior matrix to teach members of the CFMS community what we expect.  Refer to the School-Wide Matrix and the slide show below for examples of not only our School-Wide Matrix, but also examples of Classroom Matrices that have been created by teachers for individual environments.

School-Wide Matrix

Cardinal Directions

As stated, we directly teach our expectations to students.  We start out our school year by presenting expecations outlined in our handbook and teach expectations from our School-Wide Matrix.  We continue to focus on teaching expectations throughout the year during Teacher Advisory with our Cardinal Directions curriculum.

Stop, Walk and Talk

Stop, Walk and Talk is an approach used at Chippewa Falls Middle School to help decrease the number of occurrences of disrespectful behavior between students.  With this approach, we are focusing on having our students tell others to “Stop” when they are being treated with disrespect, to Walk to an adult to inform him/her of the situation, and to Talk to that adult about what took place.  Please discuss Stop, Walk and Talk with your child to help support the implementation of this approach.

Attached is a PowerPoint that was shared with staff and students to clarify expectations regarding this practice.

Check-In/Check-Out

The Tier Two intervention Check-In/Check-Out (CICO) was implemented in November of the 2012 school year at CFMS.  Students on this intervention receive a Daily Progress Report (DPR) each morning when they arrive and get feedback from their teachers over the course of each day.  The DPR is based on our school's four expectations.  At the end of the day they return the DPR to their CICO manager.  Data collected is shared with parents and the team of teachers the student works with to evaluate progress.
