Principal's News and Notes

Greetings Southview Families!

Spring is almost in the air! The days are getting longer, but the snow and cold are still here. I once heard someone say the best thing about winter is that it ends. I love the beautiful sights winter offers, but I do not care much for the cold and the poor road conditions. Our students have been real troopers as we have had times when multiple days of recess have occurred inside this winter.

The beginning of spring signals to us that our second trimester is drawing to a close and that our third and final trimester will be underway very soon. Second trimester report cards will come home on March 15th as the trimester ends on March 8th. You will have the opportunity to see the growth that has been made since conferences last month.

Thank you very much for taking the time to attend our mid-year conferences. We value the time we have with our families to share student achievement. Further, the time allows us to strengthen our relationships as we work together to support our children.

Our Tier I PBIS team is under new leadership. Mrs. Ash (1st grade) and Mrs. Bengtson (4th grade) were recently trained as Tier I Coaches. They will assist in the coordination of communication with students, families, and staff members regarding our school wide expectations. We are looking forward to celebrating our grade level behavior goals at the end of the month. One of our school goals this year was to decrease the number of Office Discipline Referrals (ODRs) coming from the playground. ODRs are earned by students who are involved with major behaviors in the areas of safety, respect, and responsibility. Currently, our playground data shows there has been a decrease in major behaviors on the playground. Please encourage your children to continue to make good choices while at recess!

The teachers and staff members at Southview continue to also monitor data in regards to student academic progress. Regularly teachers are looking at student work with their teaching peers and determining the best way to support each student and promote further learning. We strive to meet the varying needs of all of our learners.

In the very near future (March 20th), our PTO will kick off our annual CLUB’S CHOICE fundraiser. I thank you in advance for your participation. The funds that are raised pay for classroom supplies, field trips, and instructional materials and resources. Something else PTO funds will be helping to support is the purchase and installation of new playground equipment. Please join us at a PTO meeting to learn more about how you can help.

I am looking forward to seeing you at our Southview Family Night, sponsored by our PTO, on Friday, March 8th. Take some time to get outside and enjoy the fresh air, even if the air is still a little cool!

Respectfully,

Sara E. Denure
