violence in video games
Does your kid play violent video games? Well studies show that kids are getting more violent connecting to the amount of violent video games that they have played. Violent media or video games do affect kids in a negative way, and it could be fatal to them or others.
according to (Harding) “Do children become more aggressive after playing video games, or are more aggressive kids attracted to violent video games” Studies have shown that kids get more aggressive after playing a violent video game. Like the Virginia tech shooter Cho Seung Hui played a game called Counter Strike a lot in high school.
We don’t know if video games will make teens more violent it’s all about self control. according to(schaffer) “Three kinds of research link video games to increased aggression. First they look for differences between video game aggression and real life aggression.” I think video games make kids reflexes faster than making them more aggressive. I've been playing call of duty games for a couple of years and my reflexes are getting way faster than they usually are.
Some “professionals” say that video games don't affect kids in a negative way, but all but a few of the studies that we have found have proved them to be different. There are some violent incidents that have happened and the aggressor did play video games like the columbine shooting. The kids played violent video games but they were also majorly bullied and that was the cause of the snap that caused them to blow up on everyone. There are multiple other factors that make kids violent such as heredity, their past plays a big role in it, or seeing violence happen a lot so they think that it is right, or just being picked on like the kids in the columbine. video games are just one of those factors.
However there is proof that violent video games or violent media causes children to be violent or have violent thoughts. There has been studies that show this to be true. According to Craig Anderson's study any mentally maturing child that is or has been exposed to violence will be affected in a negative way whether it is negative thoughts or negative actions(Anderson). I think of it like studying, when you study something you repeat it over and over again to try to remember it. When you play video games you do the same thing over and over again so the violence get memorized without you realizing it.
Media violence is connected to juvenile delinquent kids as well. When Leonard Eron did a study he took a poll to see what kids watched violent media or plated violent video games. He found out that the kids that watch violent media sources were more violent in school. Then after that he came back 11 years later when the kids were in high school and the ones that played violent video games or watched violent media were more negatively involved in the lay. He came back yet again 11 years later and found out that the media violence affected adults were more susceptible to beat there spouses, be involved in more serious crimes, and discipline their children with violence(Eron). There are studies that show that the longer that you are exposed to violence the more violent you will think or act. According to Craig Anderson’s study, right after playing video games violent thoughts over and long exposure causes negative thoughts to occur more often and become like a second nature or more natural to the players. In addition any type of behavior can be learned from just watching it take place, since little kids do not know the difference from T or media sources and real life they think that everything that they see is really okay to do(Anderson).
So over all we have agreed that violent media games or media sources do cause a person to become more violent or have more aggressive thoughts. But sometimes it is more about self control that anything else. |
