Actually, smartphones are very important for us. We use them every day. Now I can even use some writing service on it to do my dissertation for me online in AU cause I''m not as good at making dissertation papers. Anyway, u can find more info about it at this website. |

Yeah, smartphones used in various situations now. I even use it to visit writing services to pay someone to do my assignment online cause I know that making of assignments is hard. So smartphones are really useful, but u should use it carefully. |

I think smartphones are very distracting. I find it hard to concentrate in class becuase I was in the middle of a conversation before the bell rang and now I have to wait 55 minutes to find out how the person I was talking to will respond. I think the reasons smartphones are such a distraction is because we were raised on technology and it is only going to get worse. Parents now use tablets for their kids to draw on instead of crayons and a piece of paper. Creativity is lacking becuase of things like this. I agree with Allison that it is all about on how we approch the information. I dont think technology makes us dumber it provides us with so much information that is needed for us to succeed. I think the amount of time we spend using our smartphones and chrombooks and whatever else makes us dumber. |

I am in agreement with: smartphones are wildly distracting. I am often distracted by my smartphone, and when my phone rings I always want to check it. It makes it hard to focus. It bothers me if I don't check it because I am wondering who is texting me. One time in the hallway, I was walking with my phone; I ran into a door. My friend had to pull me back when I almost ran into the post outside the laundry room. |

I do believe smartphones are a distraction. The minute a phone goes off in class, whether it is yours or not, everyone is looking around for the culprit. A lot of people can't get through a class period without looking at their phone. Maybe just because its a habit but either way phones are a distraction. I do realize it is a distraction for me as well. If I have my phone sitting next to me while working on homework I always pick it up and scroll through social media. We need to learn how to put our phones away for a while and talk face to face with someone, without a phone in your hand, or go out to dinner and socialize not scroll through facebook or twitter. Overall, phones are a distraction and its just a matter of turning if off and putting it away before we learn not to be so attached. |

I agree with Allison in saying that smartphones in stating that the amount of smartphone usage would have a negative impact on how we use information that is given to us. It's very simple to search on google "What is the capital of Italy," however this way of searching for information gives only a temporary answer in our memory. On the other hand, technology has improved our way of living. There are ways to obtain free electricity to power thousands of homes and there are pieces of tech that provide cleaner drinking water for vast regions with serious droughts. Technology isn't necessarily "evil," it is the way in which we use it to decide whether it is good or bad. |

I agree with Carli and Megan in that smartphones and other technology is distracting. I have learned that it is best to not have my phone next to me while I'm trying to do my homework and other tasks. Otherwise, the tempation is too great to want to check your phone, even if you didn't see it light up. However, I think that today's technology is tremendously helpful too. It has allowed us to be more precise and efficient. When it is abused, however, it can lead to issues. Too much time looking at the little screen of your smartphone can lead to impairment of cognitive functioning (like Megan said) and can cause a person to become almost too lenient on technology, and it's benefits. |
Megan H 03/02/2016 9:59 AM |
I can definitely relate to Carli. Whenever I hear my phone buzz or see it light up, it's like a pull. I HAVE to check it. This is so distracting when I'm trying to go to sleep or do homework or read. I really think the power of technology lies with the person. As a whole, I believe technolgy is a tremendous resource that has given us some amazing things and has generally helped make us smarter, not dumber. Having said that, many people do not use it for the tool it truly is and instead it becomes a distraction and impairment to cognitive functioning. Technology is a blessing and a curse. it's really up to you. |

I think this has a few ways to look at it. The way I look at it is, technology is strongly advancing and quick. I think that this has quite a few positives to it making our everyday lives a bit easier and entertaining. However, people are highly distracted with this technology and need to learn how to properly manage this. So many people are missing out on things around them due to the fact that they are looking down at their phones. There is then the dangerous side of things like when people are driving for example. While driving I notice people texting and on their phones all the time. I even do this at times even knowing of the dangers. |

I think that the increased use of smartphones can have a negative impact on how we approach information. We can use our phones to take pictures or screenshots of anything that will fit on our screen. We also have the ability at any moment to look up information on the Internet. Knowing this, many people will readily forget information because of the assumption that it will be easily available to them in the future. If you are studying for a test and just take a picture of the answer key to an important worksheet, you will remember less of the material than if you would learn the process that produces the correct answers. We might rely on our smartphones too much to remember things for us. |

I completly agree that smartphones are very distracting. I also belive that some people use there phones way to much. Not everyone uses there phone to much but the people that i know love there phones ways to much. Readin the artical reminded me of when i was a big phone leach. I rember always stoping what i was doing just to see a text. I compleatly %100 agree that cell phones can be a distraction. |
Tyler 02/29/2016 1:53 PM |
I do not think technology has made us dumber. Rather, I think the technology we use has become smarter, leaving the normal person in the dust. Thirty years ago, the internet was just a piece of science ficion, space stations were only in Ender's Game, and cell phones were the size of a brick. The power of computer technology has grown exponentially and, natrualy, not everyone fully grasps its complexity. So by comparison, the average person in 2016 will seem far less intellegent next to their technology than someone from 1980. |
Carli Olson 02/29/2016 9:37 AM |
I agree with Brooke when it comes to having to put my phone on silent. If I don't have my phone on silent or completey off, it is hard for me to get anything done. I was reading yesterday and even though my phone was on silent, it lights up when I have a text or notification and it was really distracting. Before I had a phone, I would read for hours and get tasks done quickly. Now that I have a phone, I often read a few pages and then feel obligated to check my phone. Technology is such a huge part of today's world that even if you wanted to cut all ties with your cell phones and technology, in reality you can't. Everyone is too reliant on it for communication and it is just built in to our everyday lives. |
Nathan 02/29/2016 9:16 AM |
A good point is brought up by Brooke and Logan that electronics do distract me when I am studying. when I am in a teachers class during work time it is very clear that I should not be doing anything other than working on the task at hand which seems very easy because of the fact that I get in trouble when distracted. I agree that electronics can be distracting and I think it may be advantageous to find someone who will keep me accountable when I am at home. |

I agree with Gwenyth in that while smartphones can lead to some cognitive failures, they have not made us dumber as a whole. I think statements like that are way too far-reaching, and really disregard what technology can do for us. I think that if we want to combat the negative effects of technology, we really need to focus on educating people on some of the drawbacks of technology, and how we can use it to its fullest potential without it being a distraction.
Also, my phone just buzzed, and I wasn't even distracted. Like, I finished my response and then went to type this part and I still haven't looked at my phone. So take that science. |
Maygen 02/29/2016 9:12 AM |
I do agree that smartphones can be a distraction, but they can also be a useful tool. If used in the right ways smartphones can help expand our knowledge, not limit it. However, most people don't use their phone wisely. They use it to check social media and text constantly. I don't think we are dumber, or that phones are making us dumber. I think we need to learn to use our phones in an effective way instead of having a constant distraction at our finger tips. Know when it is okay to use your phone, have it out, and when you should put your phone away. People are too indulged in the life of social media. Everyone just needs to put their phone down for a little bit, and I think we will be just fine. |
Makenzie S. 02/29/2016 9:03 AM |
I wholeheartedly agree that smartphones are often a distraction to people. But, in my opinion, what the article defines as a distraction is false. It is true that we are often reliant on our phone to 'remember' things for us, like appointments and alarms. To me, those things arent't considered a distraction they are things we need to remember. I don't believe that smartphones make us dumber simply because they give us access to knowledge and information beyond what we can get in a traditional school setting. If smartphones and technology make us so dumb, then why would the school district pay for students to have their own chromebooks? |
Gwenyth G. 02/29/2016 9:02 AM |
I agree with the fact that there are defintiely some cognitive failures that are associated with smart phones. I do not feel that they have made us "dumber" because I feel that smart phones are more of a useful tool, than they are harmful, when used moderately. I do agree that sometimes people are very unaware of the outside world when engulfed in their smart phones, however when used properly they can help with organizational skills, puntuality, and with staying connected with people who you don't get to see every day. |

I agree with Brooke, I don't think that technology is making us "dumber." It absolutely does have the ability to completely captivate its users, though. Brooke is totally right, it seems like I'm getting run into in the hall by someone on their phone every day. The article also mentions that it's extremely distracting when your phone goes off, taking your attention away from the task at hand and impairing your ability to work productively. This is definitely true, just ask any student who tries doing homework with their phone anywhere nearby. |
Brooke 02/29/2016 8:53 AM |
I don't think technology has made us "dumber", but I do agree with the cognitive failures. I notice most of the time that people who run into me or when I see people who run into others are people who are typically on their phones and not paying attention. Also, phones do tend to take our attention away from other tasks that are going on around us. Sometimes if I'm trying to read a book I have to put my phone on do not disturb or else I get distracted whenever my phone buzzes from a text or notification. |
Mrs. Crocker 02/28/2016 8:20 PM |
According to the article, a recent study found that people who use their smartphones a great deal are more likely to experience "cognitive failures." Have you found this to be true? Has technology made us "dumber"? Discuss how technology may be affecting our brains. |
