I have gone back and forth on how I feel about the whole erasing memories idea. The idea of relieveing poeple who have made mistakes resulting to drugs and it spiliring out of control I think is great but have they really learned the power than of self will. I understand drug addiction is very very hard to over come. Your body gets so used to recieving the drug that when it no longer is recieving it that it potentially "shuts down" I feel if we were to simply erase the memories that act as triggers they do not learn the power of self will. By that I mean they do not learn that they themselves are able to overcome something like drug addiction. To me the idea of erasing memories is and easy way out to those have drug addiction problems. |

I do think that the concept of "erasing memories" is an enticing one, however, are we playing God? I know that this will help people and would untimately be better for them, but the research did not highlight potential negative effects. Because the brain's association areas are an interlocking network of neurons, is it really possible to just delete certain memories? How could we target only a few specific memories when everything in the brain is connected? While I understand that this is a specific drug developed by top psychologists in the field, all drugs do have side effects. It is an itriguing idea that we could selectively erase triggers that could contribute to a relapse but it begs the question, would this start a world-wide debate? |

I thought the section "Erasing memories could be the future of addiction treatment" was really interesting. It is incredible that we are even capable of doing such a thing in the first place.. Being able to effectively treat those who are addicted to drugs such as meth, would be very beneficial to society. Although not everyone is willing to believe that our small community has a drug problem, unfortunately we do have one and treatment such as erasing memories has the potential to make a huge impact on the drug infested areas around the nation. Not only would this treatment benefit entire communities, on a smaller scale, it would give the people who are severely addicted a clean slate and a chance to start over. |
