Financial Assistance for College
Aside from personal savings plans, the two main sources of financial help for college are federal/state aid, and scholarships. Financial Aid programs provide financial assistance for students to help pay for postsecondary education at colleges and universities. This includes career and technical colleges, too. Federal/state financial aid is available to many students from low to middle-income families. If you think you need financial assistance to attend college, apply for financial assistance using FAFSA (free application for federal student aid). The FAFSA will determine if you qualify for one or more of the following:
Grants - money you are not required to pay back
Loans - must be repaid
Work-study - federally subsidized part-time jobs while attending school.
Financial aid money may be available from the federal government, the state of Wisconsin, colleges, business and service organizations, banks, savings and loan associations, and credit unions.
In addition to financial aid, students should consider applying for scholarships. If awarded, scholarship money can range from a few hundred dollars up to full-tuition. For more information on scholarships, click here.
