I agree with Eliza that I can see it both ways. On the one had, if there is research showing that it is helpful in treating things like depression and PTSD which are very tricky issues to treat, then I think it's an amazing breakthrough that will be so great for helping so many people. Looking at it from another perspective, I can see the potential dangers. Using psychedelic drugs like LSD, psilocybin, and MDMA seems a little like playing with fire. These things can have catostrophic consequences and are generally thought of as bad. What sorts of side effects are possible? Is the risk really worth the reward? Is it really a good idea to give a drug addict more drugs to help them? These are things that I would want to know before forming a true opinion. |

To reiterate what Carli said, it is unusual for potentially harmful drugs to be used to treat illness. But I am also interested in seeing science branch out and try things before discounting them completly. I think in our day and age the word "drug" has a very negative connotation to it. In reality, a drug is a substance that causes a physiological effect when ingested. By this definition, courtesy of Merriam Webster, that cup of coffee you drink every morning is a drug. And all too often we hear the word drug and immediatly link it to addiction, depression, and failure. While this is a good saftey mechanism, I think it can hamper research and dilute creativity. |

I think it could go both ways honestly. Using harmful drugs to treat someone who is probably already on drugs would probably make the problem worse honestly. But if it can actually be benificial I would love to see that! If theres no way or good way to treat people now than why not try new things and see if they work?? Ya know what im sayin? |

I think that the use of psychedelics will be great if everything goes as planned, however they could also be very dangerous. It is another medical experiment among hundreds of others, we won't know if they are helpful or harmful unless we try. It is just mind boggling to think about psychedelics being used in a medical setting and for treament purposes. I have really only viewed drugs as harmful, so it will be interesting to see if potentially dangerous drugs end up being beneficial. |

Is it a good or a bad thing that we are using these potentially dangerous substances to treat patients? |
