Sound Study Guide
Your child will need to know the vocabulary words below. We have been reviewing everyday in Science class. However, extra repetition is always helpful.
Sound – noise made by vibrations
Vibration – a rapid back and forth movement
Volume – how loud a sound is
Property – a characteristic of an object that you notice with your five senses
Sound source – where a vibration starts
Sound receiver – something that hears a sound
Sound discrimination – the ability to identify sounds and tell sounds apart
Pitch – describes how high or low a sound is
Amplify – to make sounds louder
Stethoscope – an instrument for listening to sounds in the body.
Inner ear – the part of the ear that transmits, or carries, messages to the brain
Frequency – how fast or slow something is vibrating
Along with the vocabulary you child will also need to know the following facts. All sound is caused by vibrations. Sound is measured in decibels. The faster the vibrations, the higher the pitch. The slower the vibrations, the lower the pitch.
