Direct Instruction Classes
Direct Instruction classes are the main platform for student learning in the PAS Program at CVHS. These classes are somewhat traditional in nature and similar to classes at Chi-Hi or other high schools. We use the term "Direct Instruction" to distinguish these classes from Independent Study classes, which are described in another section.
Below are some of the components or descriptions of Direct Instruction (DI) classes in the PAS Program at CVHS:
- DI classes meet on a Monday-Wednesday-Friday schedule.
- While DI classes are lead by a teacher, the learning that takes place comes from both the teacher and other students.
- DI classes at CVHS are discussion based and engagement and participation are necessary.
- DI classes at CVHS are not homework driven - meaning that homework in not assigned from one class to the next. New material is presented, discussed and practiced during each class period. If a student is in class and engages in the learning, there should be not work that has to be done outside of class.
- Since DI classes are discussion based and not homework driven, attendance is expected and required. Students who do not attend consistently cannot earn credit in DI classes.
The GAP Program and Transition do not have formal Direct Instruction classes although the programs do include some learning that is delivered through the Direct Instruction format.
