The Merriam Webster Online Student Dictionary defines comprehension as the ability to comprehend or understand. And according to Beverly Tyner author of Small-Group Reading Instruction: A Differentiated Teaching Model for Beginning and Struggling Readers,

Comprehension strategies are sets of steps that good readers use to make sense of the text they are reading.
